‘Love Your Bones’ – Better Bones Week 2011

Oct 17 – 23

Osteoporosis New Zealand is celebrating Better Bones Week 17–23 October this year. This is our opportunity to reach out with a national focus to educate Kiwis how they can build better bones for themselves and their families over their lifetime.

Osteoporosis, meaning 'porous bone' affects nearly one third of all men, and one in every two women over the age of 60 in New Zealand. It is estimated that 3,000 people break a hip every year in New Zealand, equating to a yearly cost of approximately $330m.

This year our theme is 'love your bones' – there are three easy ways you can make bone health a daily part of your routine, and help prevent this disease from affecting you and your family.

  1. Firstly, optimise your calcium intake – Improve your dietary habit by adding calcium rich foods such as milk and other dairy products.
  2. Give your bones a workout – Daily weight bearing exercise like walking regularly will strengthen your bones
  3. Finally, get some sun each day, sensibly – A daily dose of vitamin D helps our bones absorb calcium and stay stronger

Better Bones Week is vitally important in raising awareness of osteoporosis and what can be done to prevent it. It's never too late.
