"You Deserve a Medal" awards

June Struthers

June Struthers of Lower Hutt won the Fonterra Anlene 2007 Medal at Osteoporosis New Zealand's annual 'You Deserve a Medal' Awards, presented at Parliament on 16th October, by the then Minister of Health, Pete Hodgson and Osteoporosis New Zealand's Bone Ambassadors, Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell.

Erin Pohe from Fonterra said – "June was an easy choice for us, she is physically active, has so many interests which take her into the community. She contributes on so many levels. She quietly inspires those around her."

After June retired in her early sixties, she joined a local gym. Nearly twenty years later, her trainer at the gym nominated her for the 2007 'You Deserve a Medal' award.

June now lifts weights, often heavier than those of her younger class mates.

June believes in keeping both her mind and body active. In summer she swims in the sea daily, saying it is invigorating. June also belongs to a literary group, as she is passionate about reading.

As a member of the beagle club, June spends time with club members and their dogs – putting them all through their paces.

June still uses a push mower to cut the lawns of her quarter acre section and takes pride in keeping it looking pristine, even painting the fences.

Stan Blow

Stan Blow is highly motivated to improve his health. He is positive and passionate about health, even after three hip re-placements.

Stan from Auckland is the ACC 'You Deserve a Medal' award winner for 2007. He was presented with his medal by Katie Sadlier, General Manager Injury Prevention for ACC, at the awards cere-mony at Parliament.

His exercise regime consists of weekly swims, taking part in Auckland University of Technology (AUT) exercise pro-gramme and regular walks.

Stan’s exercise regime has alleviated chronic pain, enables him to walk better and most importantly he says, "I feel brighter and happier for being physically active". At the age of 83 Stan is still an active granddad.

Stan believes his regular exercise, along with his active contributions to his local community, including his church, enable him to live a happy and fulfilled life.

Sien Van Der Veeken

Sien also frequently competes in the Round Taupo 160KM bike race, originally racing by herself, but now up to three generations of her family join her.

She says, "I am very involved in my chil-dren's and grandchildren’s lives and sporting activities as well as the local community. It is important to have a balanced life and exercise is the key to keeping healthy."

"We all have differing levels of sporting ability but the most important thing is to get out there and 'just do it'."
